Your Very Life

Everything happened too fast, I had no time to react to it. It was one scene O.K., the other scene K.O. We were cheery and gay when we decided to go for a supper a little further tonight. We even had fun singing songs with my ukulele. The next thing I know, Chin Wui yelled: "Oh no! Joanna, look to your left!" Joanna was halfway in her dialogue as a vividly make out a silhouette of 3 guys sitting on the road and 2 motorcycles laid defeated.

None of us expected this. Neither did I. I would have drove on, until Chin Wui remarked: "I think it's one of our students!" It was Gary. Two riders crashed the red light and they were too fast to stop. Fear did the rest of the job, as they lost control and rammed into Gary. Debris, and wounds.

Gary was swearing in anger. That totally means he's fine, with scratches on his limbs. The two riders were fine too. The younger one still in shock. Everything was resolved and was fine afterward. Nevertheless, this time, Wei Huai got concerned. It was his best friend.

This accident reminded me of the story of King Nebuchadnezzar:
“Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor. Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death; those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled. But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.
Daniel 5:18-21
If you remember, in Daniel 4:28-37, King Nebuchadnezzar was completely humbled by the Sovereign Lord God of Israel in his most glorious moment. He had everything in control, including his own life, even the life and death of others, or so he thought, until everything was taken away from him.

Much like King Nebuchadnezzar, we were merry and jolly in celebration. We thought we had everything in control. But when accident came, it came like wind. Everyone was shocked by the unexpected. It went completely out of our control.

The accident could have been worse, I thank God for that, because Gary is really a nice and kind friend, but it really stayed with me tonight: How long are we going to pretend that we really have control over our own lives? This accident told me otherwise.

Truth is, we have completely no control over our lives, especially in the highest and glorious moment of our lives. We don't even have control over our lives even if we choose to cut ourselves in the wrist. If God keeps you, you stay! The point is, nothing is within our complete grasp.

So then what is our salvation, if our very lives are to be demanded tonight? Do you think you have your very life secured?
“Then [the rich fool] said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
Luke 12:18-20
If our very lives are demanded tonight, what will be left for you? We spend our whole life in search for security: we study day and night hoping that our academic will secure our future; hoping that a good job earns us good money; hoping good money will give us easy and merry lives. But if we are to die this very night, what is left for us?

Jesus Christ offers us security and treasure no one can take away. He offers us a inheritance that is eternal and incorruptible. Find your security in Him, find the salvation of your soul in His work on the Cross. This Christmas, He invites us once again to seek His gift of eternal life, that if our very lives are demanded tonight, we will be well secured in His assurance forever!
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Matthew 6:19-20
